Wat Phra That Doi Tung

Wat Phra That Doi Tung is a Buddhist temple and stupa complex on Doi Tung mountain in northern Chiang Rai Province, Thailand; it is an important local pilgrimage site. The site sits within the larger Doi Tung tourism area that includes gardens and a royal villa.

Visitors find a hilltop chedi and shrine compound with views across the surrounding hills and valleys; the site is commonly combined with the nearby Mae Fah Luang Garden and Doi Tung Royal Villa. Facilities and roads make the temple accessible by car, and the compound is compact enough to explore in under two hours.

The chedi is traditionally regarded as a reliquary stupa and the temple complex has been repaired and rebuilt at different times; local chronicles and temple records describe periodic restorations. Exact founding dates are not definitively documented in surviving inscriptions but the site is part of the long Buddhist heritage of northern Thailand.

The temple sits on Doi Tung mountain in Mae Fah Luang area of Chiang Rai Province, near the Doi Tung Royal Villa and garden complex. It is reached by road from Chiang Rai city and by the regional roads serving the northern highlands.

Set at the summit of Chiang Rai’s Doi Tung mountain, Wat Phra That Doi Tung towers more than 1,400m above the surrounding countryside and the Burmese border, offering one of the most spectacular views of any Thai religious site.

The temple was founded in the 10th century and renovated in the 13th century by order of the first Lanna ruler, King Mengrai. It is an important pilgrimage site thanks to its sacred relic of the Buddha, reputedly a collarbone, which was the original reason for its construction. It is crowded with worshippers for much of the year, especially during Buddhist festivals, so parking can be difficult.

The temple has two fully gilded chedis, one holding the Buddha relic and the other several more; both are believed to date from the original construction ordered by Chiang Saen’s King Atchuteraj and were renovated again in the 1960s. The hilly approach is lined with bronze bells, and the steep mountain road is kept in good repair as it also leads to the Doi Tung Royal Villa, former residence of the late Princess Mother, and the Mae Fah Luang Garden, one of her Royal Projects.

Wat Phra That Doi Tung is on Doi Tung in Chiang Rai province (Mae Fah Luang area). Visitors commonly reach it by car, taxi or organized minivan tour from Chiang Rai city; the temple is accessed via the mountain road to Doi Tung and there is visitor parking near the site. If using public transport, take a bus or minivan toward Mae Sai/Mae Fah Luang and change to local transport serving Doi Tung-expect the final leg to be by road up the mountain.
