About Wat Jong Paen

Fang lies close to the Myanmar border, so it is no surprise that its temples show a distinct Burmese, and particularly Shan, influence. Wat Jong Paen, just off the town’s main road, is a fine example, with a photogenic multi-tiered roof on the viharn.

Since Fang receives so few foreign visitors, the monks here grow quite excited when a foreigner shows interest in their temple, and will probably corner you to practise their limited English.

How to Get to Wat Jong Paen

Wat Jong Paen is in Mae Hong Son town. From Chiang Mai the usual route is Highway 1095 (a winding mountain road); driving distance to Mae Hong Son town is roughly 240-260 km and the trip is commonly served by intercity buses that run from Chiang Mai to Mae Hong Son. Once in Mae Hong Son the town and its temples are compact-you can reach local temples by a short tuk‑tuk or taxi ride from the bus terminal or walk if they are nearby.
