About Wat To Phae#

One of the most interesting temples around Khun Yuam, Wat To Phae lies about 6km west of town. It is a beautiful Burmese temple with an attractive chedi, and the appealing landscapes along the way make it an excellent focus for a trip out of town.

The temple’s most outstanding feature is its intricate, Burmese-style meditation hall (viharn), set beside a gold-topped chedi and an attractive Mon-style pagoda; all three buildings are beautifully constructed and very well maintained. The temple was reportedly built by local Shan logging folk who came here to assemble teak rafts for transporting their timber along the river, and eventually pooled their skills to raise this temple - the name Wat To Phae means ‘temple of raft assembling’.

The buildings are highly photogenic, and among the many fascinating artefacts on site are a seated Buddha image and a stunning tapestry about 4 metres wide, encrusted with rubies and pearls. Wat To Phae is beautiful in its own right, and all the more so for its setting beside a lazy river, flanked by bright green paddy fields.
