High / low are average daily temperatures (°C). “Feels” reflects how hot or cold it feels, allowing for humidity.
Northern Highlands (Sapa, Ha Giang, Lao Cai)
March brings a definite thaw in the highlands; lower slopes green up and rivers run clearer after winter. Trekking becomes more pleasant with milder daytime temperatures (often 10-18°C) but mornings remain chilly and fog can cling to passes, reducing visibility on the Ha Giang loop. Roadworks and the return of motorbike traffic mean travel times can stretch; a light down jacket and sealed footwear keep you comfortable on muddy paths.
Hanoi & Red River Delta
March brings noticeably warmer days and increased humidity, with late-winter fog giving way to clearer light and blooming jacaranda and bauhinia. Temperatures often reach the high teens to low 20s°C; the air can still feel fresh in early mornings but afternoons are pleasant for walking around Hoan Kiem Lake and the French Quarter. Expect the first heavy showers near the month’s end - good time for fewer crowds and lively street food scenes.
North Central Coast (Thanh Hóa, Vinh, Hue)
March turns noticeably warmer and more humid, with afternoons that can feel tropical as temperatures push into the low to mid‑20s°C. Rivers swell slightly with earlier rains inland, but most coastal beaches from Thanh Hóa to Hue are pleasant for walking and early-season swimming. This month is ideal for cycling the Hai Van Pass near Da Nang and visiting Hue’s tombs before the intense rains of autumn.
Central Coast (Da Nang, Hoi An, Nha Trang)
March warms noticeably and the sea becomes inviting for swimming and diving; daytime highs move into the mid to high 20s°C, and visibility is good for underwater activities near Nha Trang’s reefs. Hoi An’s ancient town is lively but not yet at its hot-season peak; carry sunscreen and a hat for midday sun. Occasional afternoon showers start to appear late in the month, but they are typically brief and leave streets freshly washed.
Central Highlands (Da Lat, Buôn Ma Thuột, Kon Tum)
March sees warming days and more stable skies, drawing visitors to mountain coffee farms and the hill station’s lakes. Daytime temperatures usually reach the low to mid‑20s°C and mornings still have a fresh edge; expect fewer mosquitoes than in the lowlands. It’s a great month for road trips across the plateau and for sampling the region’s cooler-climate produce, but bring a lightweight jacket for dawn and dusk.
Southern Vietnam & Mekong Delta (Ho Chi Minh City, Can Tho, Phú Quốc)
March begins to feel hotter as humidity rises: daytime temperatures climb into the low to mid‑30s°C and the sun is strong enough for midday heat fatigue. The Mekong’s water levels may be lower before the monsoon, which can make some smaller canals less navigable but also easier for certain market visits. Stay hydrated, carry sun protection and plan active excursions for early morning or late afternoon.
