Northern Highlands (Sapa, Ha Giang, Lao Cai)

December is a cold, often foggy month in the mountains; overnight temperatures frequently dip near or below freezing on higher ridges, and the risk of frost is present across the highest villages. Daytime sunshine can be strong and deceptive - you’ll need both sun protection and thermal layers. Travel is straightforward on the main routes, but expect slushy mud on lesser paths and bring crampons for serious alpine sections.

Hanoi & Red River Delta

December returns the damp, cool feel of Hanoi’s winter - grey skies, frequent light drizzle and temperatures that sit in the low teens by day. Street vendors keep serving warming bowls of pho while central heating is rare, so layers and a water-resistant outer shell make walking around the Old Quarter comfortable. It’s quieter than the high-tourist season and atmospheric for museums and coffeehouse culture, but avoid thin shirts if you’re sensitive to chilly, humid weather.
