The Vasa Museum in Stockholm houses the almost-completely preserved 17th-century warship Vasa and is one of Sweden’s most visited museums. The vessel sank in Stockholm harbour on its maiden voyage in 1628 and was salvaged and conserved in the 20th century.

Exhibits focus on the ship’s construction, the archaeological recovery, conservation processes and the people associated with the vessel. The museum building provides elevated walkways and viewing platforms so the hull can be studied from multiple levels, and associated collections include artefacts recovered from the ship. The Vasa was salvaged in 1961 after being submerged for over three centuries, and the museum opened in 1990 to display the conserved vessel. Ongoing conservation and climate control are central to the museum’s work.

You can also reach Djurgården by the short sightseeing ferry from Nybroplan (seasonal) or by bus; driving from central Stockholm is only a few kilometres and there is limited paid parking near the museum.
