Gamla Stan sits on the island of Stadsholmen and is the best-preserved medieval quarter in Stockholm. Narrow alleys like Mårten Trotzigs gränd and main shopping streets Västerlånggatan and Österlånggatan lead between Stortorget and the Royal Palace. Historic landmarks, including Stockholm Palace and Storkyrkan, are all within a few minutes’ walk of each other.

By day the area buzzes with sightseers, souvenir shops and cafés; by evening the lanes quieten and you get atmospheric lighting on the stone streets. Dining leans toward traditional Swedish inns and tourist-friendly restaurants; nightlife is low-key, concentrated in the small pubs and bars around the square and along the harbour. Boutiques and speciality shops cluster on the main pedestrian streets rather than in malls.
