Banks & Torres (Northern Vanuatu)

May brings the beginning of the drier trade-wind season; the air feels noticeably less oppressive and mornings around the Banks Islands are fresher under southeast winds. Waterfalls remain full and trekking conditions improve quickly, making hikes on Gaua and Vanua Lava better than in the wet months. Boats run more reliably, so this is a good time to travel north-to-south by sea, but still carry a light rain jacket for occasional showers.

Espiritu Santo & Malakula (Large central islands)

May’s arrival of southeast trades brings noticeably drier, fresher air to Santo and Malekula, with warm sunny days and cooler nights that make sleeping comfortable without fans. The SS President Coolidge and surrounding reefs have improved visibility for diving, and trekking to Champagne Beach or inland villages is much more pleasant. This window is one of the best for visiting by small-boat or plane as services resume regular schedules.

Efate & Shefa (Port Vila and surrounding islands)

May ushers in the drier southeast trade winds and noticeably fresher mornings across Efate - Port Vila feels more comfortable and mosquito pressure eases. Daytime temps drop into the comfortable low 20s-mid-20s °C and sea conditions stabilise, making this an excellent time for snorkeling around Hideaway Island. Bookings pick up for diving and day-trip boats, so reserve charters if you have a specific date.

Taféa (Tanna, Aneityum and the southern islands)

May’s shift toward the southeast trade winds produces noticeably drier, cooler conditions: mornings are fresh and humidity drops across the southern islands. Yasur’s eruptions are easier to view from rim lookout points in clearer air, and snorkeling around Anelcauhat Bay becomes more reliable. Book local guides in advance as tourist services ramp up after the wet season, and bring a light fleece for evenings.
