Banks & Torres (Northern Vanuatu)
By February the rain remains frequent and thunderstorms are common across the northern cluster, with temperatures commonly in the high 20s to low 30s °C and high humidity. Trails to volcanic hot springs and village visits around Motalava become muddier and steeper; local transport is slower as boats stay in harbour on bad days. This month is quiet for tourists so you’ll find empty guesthouses but fewer services and a higher chance of cancelled flights.
Espiritu Santo & Malakula (Large central islands)
Storms are common in February and can bring sustained rain and strong winds that churn coastal waters around Luganville and the coral reefs. Trekking across Malekula’s ridges becomes muddy and slippery, and some remote guesthouses close when access is cut. If you travel this month, plan conservatively, keep flexible travel dates, and carry waterproof footwear and a headlamp for occasional power outages.
Efate & Shefa (Port Vila and surrounding islands)
February’s weather continues hot and wet with regular storms and high humidity; the lagoon around Port Vila is prone to choppier waters which affects short boat runs to Eton and Eratap. Sightseeing in town is often punctuated by showers, and small airlines may rearrange flights during storms. Pack light rain gear and waterproof footwear, and keep activities flexible - hotel spas and restaurants provide reliable shelter on rainy days.
Taféa (Tanna, Aneityum and the southern islands)
February typically stays very wet and muggy with frequent thunderstorms and short, intense rain bursts that refresh the green volcanic slopes of Tanna. Coastal waters around Anatom and Aneityum can be rough, limiting dive trips and small-boat crossings from Port Vila or Luganville. Plan flexible itineraries and pick sturdy shoes for muddy village paths; cultural homestays are a comfortable refuge during wet spells.
