How to Get to Tvøroyri#

Tvøroyri is on Suðuroy and is reached by ferry from the main islands or by a sequence of road/ferry transfers after arriving at Vágar Airport. There are no trains; timetables for ferries and buses are seasonal and should be checked before travel.

By Air

Vágar Airport (FAE): The main international gateway for the Faroe Islands is Vágar Airport on Vágar island. To reach Tvøroyri (on Suðuroy) you cannot fly directly-arrive at Vágar and then continue by road/ferry via Tórshavn.

(No direct flights to Suðuroy): Suðuroy is served by ferry rather than scheduled international flights; all international air arrivals land at Vágar.

By Train & Bus

Train: There is no railway in the Faroe Islands.

Ferry / Bus: To reach Tvøroyri on Suðuroy you typically travel by road to the ferry terminal at Krambatangi (near Tvøroyri) via Tórshavn and take the domestic ferry operated by Strandfaraskip Landsins (or check seasonal vehicle ferry services). The ferry crossing and road transfers depend on the timetable-allow several hours for the transfer from Vágar airport via Tórshavn and onward ferry connections. Local buses connect the Suðuroy ferry terminal with Tvøroyri centre.

How to Get Around Tvøroyri#

Tvøroyri requires at least one ferry leg after arriving in the Faroes (Vágar Airport → Tórshavn → ferry to Suðuroy). Ferries and bus connections are the backbone of travel; plan transfers carefully and check seasonal schedules.

  • Ferry (Suðuroy) - The primary way to reach Tvøroyri from Tórshavn is by ferry operated by the national ferry service (Strandfaraskip Landsins) or other seasonal services. Ferry schedules vary seasonally and crossings can take from ~2 hours depending on route and vessel; vehicle ferries serve longer-distance island hops.
  • Bus - Local buses link ferry terminals and villages on Suðuroy, including Tvøroyri. Services are suitable for short transfers but are less frequent than on larger islands-plan connections to match ferry arrivals and departures.
  • Taxi - Taxis are available in Tórshavn and on Suðuroy for direct transfers between the airport, ferry terminal and Tvøroyri; they are handy outside bus hours or with luggage. Pre-book in high season to ensure availability.
  • Car / Rental (€40-€90/day (rental)) - Renting a car (available mainly on larger islands) allows you to cross by vehicle ferry and explore Suðuroy at your own pace; roads on Suðuroy are manageable but can be narrow and exposed to weather. Book vehicle ferry slots in advance during busy periods.
  • Bicycle - Cycling on Suðuroy is possible in fair weather for local trips, but island distances and wind make this challenging; e-bikes help. Roads are scenic but can be exposed to strong winds.
  • Walking - Tvøroyri is compact with an attractive harbourfront and is best explored on foot once you arrive; coastal paths and local services are within walking distance of the town centre.
