How to Get to Porkeri#
Porkeri is on Suðuroy in the Faroe Islands and is reached by a combination of air and sea: fly into Vágar, then continue by road and ferry via Tórshavn to Suðuroy, or use ferry services from the Faroese capital. Ferry schedules and cross-channel connections govern total travel time, often several hours.
Vágar Airport (FAE): The main international airport for the Faroe Islands is Vágar (near Sørvágur). From Vágar you travel by road and ferry/bridge connections to Suðuroy (the island where Porkeri sits) - journey times include a drive to the ferry terminal and a ferry crossing, making total travel to Porkeri several hours. Ferries and the internal flight network are seasonal and subject to weather.
Tórshavn (Faroese domestic connections): There are no direct commercial flights to Suðuroy’s main harbour from Vágar for passengers - the common approach is ferry from Tórshavn or Sumba/Skálavík area; check Smyril Line / local ferry schedules and Atlantic Airways notices for the most current connections.
Train: There is no rail network in the Faroe Islands.
Bus / Ferry: Ferries and local bus services are the backbone of inter-island travel. From Tórshavn, the Smyril Line ferry or local ferry services (and occasional small passenger vessels) connect to Suðuroy; on-island buses link ports with villages such as Porkeri. Timetables vary seasonally and are weather-dependent.
How to Get Around Porkeri#
Expect a multi-stage journey: international flight to Vágar or arrival in Tórshavn, then ferry to Suðuroy and local bus/taxi to Porkeri. Ferry and bus timetables determine final arrival windows - check schedules closely.
- Ferry (Smyril Line / Local Car Ferries) (Varies by route and vehicle (check operator)) - Ferries are essential for reaching Suðuroy from Tórshavn and for moving vehicles between islands. Ferry crossings can be several hours and are subject to weather; book vehicle space in advance during peak season.
- Bus (Faroe Islands local buses) (DKK 20-80 per trip (typical regional fares)) - On Suðuroy and around Porkeri local buses connect villages with ferry ports and Tórshavn on scheduled routes. Services are practical for travellers without cars but check timetables as frequencies can be low outside summer.
- Car Rental / Driving (€60-€120/day plus ferry vehicle fee) - Hiring a car on the main islands and taking ferries is the most flexible way to visit Porkeri and explore Suðuroy. Roads are narrow in places but well maintained; ferry reservations for vehicles are advised in peak season.
- Taxi / Private Transfer (DKK 200-800 depending on distance) - Taxis provide point-to-point transfer from ferry ports or local airstrips to Porkeri; these are useful for door-to-door travel but comparatively expensive on rural islands.
- Cycling / Hiking (Free-DKK 100/day for rental) - Suðuroy’s compact villages and scenic coastlines make cycling and hiking excellent options for local exploration in summer; distances between settlements can be significant however so plan accordingly.
- Walking - Porkeri itself is small and very walkable; walking gives the best way to experience the village and nearby coastal paths. Prepare for changeable weather.
