Stóra Dímun
Island Small Faroese island with steep cliffs and single farm
A tiny Faroe Island in Sandoy’s southern group, inhabited by a handful of residents and managed sheep pastures. Visitors come for steep cliffs, seabird colonies, tight-knit crofting life and a rarely seen North Atlantic landscape.
Stóra Dímun is a small, privately occupied island in the Faroe Islands group, administered with Sandoy. It is notable for its steep sea cliffs and a single inhabited farmstead that provides the island’s year-round presence.
The island’s topography features dramatic cliffs and grass-covered slopes that are important for seabird colonies and traditional sheep grazing. Boat or special transfers are the usual ways to reach the shore; there is no large village or tourist infrastructure on the island.
Stóra Dímun has been inhabited for centuries as a single-farm community and has remained a working agricultural holding rather than a developed settlement. Ownership and tenancy have historically centered on the single farm that sustains the island’s population.
Geographically it lies in the central-southern Faroes between the islands of Sandoy and Suðuroy. The landscape around the island is exposed North Atlantic sea and steep coastal cliffs typical of the archipelago.
- Resident settlement: A single farmstead is the island's year-round settlement; the resident population is very small.
