How to Get to Trakai
Trakai is easiest reached via Vilnius - Vilnius Airport (VNO) and Vilnius Central Station are the usual entry points. From Vilnius most visitors take the regular buses to Trakai (about 30-40 minutes).
Vilnius Airport (VNO): The closest major airport for Trakai. Take bus 88 from the airport to Vilnius central bus/rail station (Geležinkelio st.) - typical fare around €1.50 and journey time about 25-35 minutes. A taxi from the airport to Vilnius centre costs roughly €12-20 and takes about 20-30 minutes; from Vilnius centre Trakai is another 25-35 minutes by road.
Kaunas Airport (KUN): A secondary option if flying low-cost or into central Lithuania. Shuttle/minibus services and local buses connect the airport with Kaunas centre in about 20-30 minutes for roughly €3-5; a taxi is about €12-20. From Kaunas you can reach Trakai by intercity bus (see card 2) - total travel time typically 1-1.5 hours.
Train: Trakai does not have a regular long-distance passenger rail connection; the nearest major rail hub is Vilnius Central Station (Vilnius st.). Long-distance trains operated by Lietuvos geležinkeliai connect Vilnius with other cities (Kaunas, Klaipėda) - use the Vilnius station as your rail interchange.
Bus: Regular buses run from Vilnius Bus Station (Vilniaus autobusų stotis) to Trakai (operators include local carriers). Typical one-way fares are about €1.50-2.50 and the trip takes roughly 30-40 minutes. Buses also run between Kaunas and Trakai less frequently; expect ~€2-4 and ~1-1.5 hours depending on route.
How to Get Around Trakai #
Trakai is compact and very walkable - the castle island, Old Town and lakeside are easy on foot. Bikes are commonly rented in summer to cover the lakeshore paths. The town is a short, frequent bus ride from Vilnius (roughly 30-45 minutes; fares about €1-€3). Taxis are available but not necessary for most visitors; bring small cash for market stalls and expect uneven cobbles around the castle.
