Ta Keo
Temple Unfinished Angkor temple mountain of steep sandstone tiers
A hill‑top Angkor temple in Siem Reap province, Ta Keo is an unfinished sandstone temple‑mountain from the Khmer era; visitors climb steep stairways to inspect massive blocks and early Angkor architectural experiments.
Ta Keo is a Khmer temple mountain in the Angkor Archaeological Park near Siem Reap, Cambodia, dating from the late 10th to early 11th century and dedicated to the Hindu god Shiva. It is notable for its massive sandstone construction and largely unfinished decoration.
The monument consists of a stepped temple-mountain with stacked terraces and a central sanctuary platform, offering visitors a compact example of Angkorian temple architecture. Many of the stone surfaces lack the carved reliefs found at other Angkor temples because construction was never completed.
Construction began under a late 10th-century king of the Angkor period and was intended as a grand temple-mountain; work stopped before decorative carving was finished, traditionally attributed to a construction halt after an adverse event. It remains an important example of Angkor’s temple-mountain form.
Ta Keo stands within the Angkor complex near the city of Siem Reap in northwestern Cambodia, among other major temples of the Angkor Archaeological Park.
- Unfinished temple: An early Angkor temple mountain constructed of sandstone, notable for its unfinished state and absence of carved decoration in many areas.
