Wildlife & Safaris in South Asia

Few regions rival South Asia for the drama of its wildlife safaris, where a single jeep drive might yield a tiger padding across the track, a rhino grazing the floodplain or a leopard draped in a tree. The subcontinent’s reserves shelter some of Asia’s most charismatic and endangered megafauna, and its safari culture is well developed, affordable and endlessly rewarding.

The star attractions are the big cats and megaherbivores: Bengal tigers in the central Indian jungles, Asiatic lions in Gujarat, leopards in Sri Lanka, one-horned rhinos in Assam and elephants almost everywhere. Beyond the headliners, sloth bears, crocodiles, wild dogs and hundreds of bird species make every outing unpredictable.

Safaris take many forms, from open jeeps and elephant-back tracking to boat trips through mangrove creeks and reservoirs. The dry season concentrates animals around water and delivers the best sightings, and permits often sell out early, so book core zones well in advance and go with experienced naturalists.
