South Asia’s coastline and island territories serve up some of the Indian Ocean’s most alluring beaches, from the coral atolls of the Maldives to the palm-fringed sands of Goa and the surf breaks of southern Sri Lanka. Warm turquoise water, year-round tropical warmth and a huge spread of budgets make the region a beach-lover’s playground.

The variety is remarkable: barefoot luxury on private Maldivian islands, backpacker-friendly shacks along Goa’s shore, quiet coves in the Andamans and the laid-back tempo of Sri Lanka’s south coast. Beyond sunbathing, the reefs and lagoons offer world-class diving and snorkelling, while inland lagoons and backwaters provide gentler waterborne adventures.

Seasons flip with the monsoon, so timing is key. The Maldives and India’s west coast shine from November to April, while some spots are best avoided during the summer rains. Domestic flights and ferries link most beach destinations, though remote atolls and islands can require a little extra planning.

Maldives

This nation of 1,200 low-lying coral islands scattered across the Indian Ocean is the definition of tropical luxury, with overwater villas, powder-white sand and vivid house reefs. Diving, snorkelling and total seclusion draw honeymooners and divers alike.

Goa

Mirissa

A crescent of palm-backed sand on Sri Lanka’s south coast, famous as a launch point for blue-whale watching and for its relaxed surf and nightlife. The nearby Coconut Tree Hill is one of the island’s most photographed spots.

Unawatuna

A sheltered, reef-protected bay near Galle, long beloved for its calm swimming, snorkelling and buzzing beachfront dining. Its horseshoe of golden sand and easygoing atmosphere make it a perennial Sri Lankan favourite.

Havelock Island

The jewel of the Andaman archipelago, ringed by some of India’s finest beaches and coral reefs. Radhanagar Beach’s dazzling white sand regularly ranks among Asia’s best, while the clear waters offer superb diving.

Bentota

A resort town where a lagoon meets the sea on Sri Lanka’s west coast, offering broad golden beaches alongside water sports and river safaris. Mangrove boat trips and a nearby turtle hatchery add variety to lazy beach days.

Lakshadweep

A remote, tightly protected archipelago of coral atolls off the Kerala coast, offering pristine lagoons and untouched reefs for a lucky few permit-holders. Its low-key resorts prize snorkelling, kayaking and genuine tranquillity.

Andaman and Nicobar Islands

This far-flung Bay of Bengal archipelago combines dense rainforest, empty beaches and world-class dive sites around vibrant coral. Its remoteness has preserved both the ecosystems and the cultures of several indigenous peoples.

Kerala

Beyond its famous backwaters, this lush southern state strings quiet beaches and fishing villages along the Arabian Sea. Palm-lined shores, spice-scented breezes and gentle waters make it a soothing counterpoint to India’s busier coasts.

Alappuzha

The gateway to Kerala’s famous backwaters, where a lattice of palm-fringed canals, lagoons and lakes is best explored aboard a converted rice-barge houseboat. Long sandy beaches and gentle waters add seaside calm to the languid waterborne scenery.
