How to Get to Bentota#
Bentota is best reached by road or rail from Colombo; Bandaranaike International (CMB) is the main international gateway. The Coastal Line train and the A2 bus corridor both serve Bentota directly, making onward travel straightforward.
Bandaranaike International Airport (CMB): Sri Lanka’s main international airport at Katunayake is the usual arrival point for Bentota. From CMB you can take an airport taxi or pre-booked transfer to Bentota (travel time ~1.5-2 hours by car, depending on traffic). Budget travelers often take the Airport Express or shuttle to Colombo and then continue by train or bus; combined public travel time to Bentota is typically 2-3 hours.
Ratmalana Airport (RML): Ratmalana handles some domestic flights and private charters; it’s closer to Colombo but still requires a road transfer to Bentota (1.5-2.5 hours depending on traffic and route). Taxis from either airport to Bentota are straightforward to arrange at official counters or via hotels.
Train: Bentota is on Sri Lanka’s Coastal Line and has a railway station (Bentota Railway Station) with regular services from Colombo Fort and Galle. Fast trains (intercity/express) take roughly 1.5-2 hours from Colombo Fort; fares are very affordable and vary by class (second class and third class are cheapest, reserved seats are available on some services).

- Coastal Line train (LKR 60-600) - The train from Colombo Fort to Bentota is often the most pleasant balance of price and convenience: travel time is roughly 1.5-2 hours on express services. Second-class reserved seats are affordable and comfortable; third class is very cheap but can be crowded. Check train times in advance, as services vary between fast intercity and local stopping trains.
- Intercity & local buses (LKR 60-300) - Frequent buses on the A2 run between Colombo and Bentota and stop in town; they are the cheapest option and serve many intermediate stops. Buses can be slow in peak traffic but are dependable for budget travel - keep small change and expect standing passengers on busy runs.
