A compact monastery group featuring a principal domed church, a secondary chapel and a gavit (narthex) with carved stone details and inscriptions. The complex is set on a promontory that provides framed views of the Kasagh canyon and surrounding agricultural landscapes.

Founded in the medieval period, the monastery served as a center of liturgical activity and manuscript production; its main church dates to the early 13th century. Over time the complex continued to function intermittently, underwent repairs and has been the subject of conservation work in the modern era.

Saghmosavank sits on a rocky promontory above the Kasagh River gorge near the town of Ashtarak in Aragatsotn Province, within easy reach of regional roads from Yerevan and nearby settlements.

Saghmosavank lies above the Kasagh River in Aragatsotn Province and is reached by car from Yerevan via the M1 (E117) heading northwest toward Ashtarak, then by local roads to the village of Saghmosavan. There is a small parking area near the monastery and a short uphill walk (typically 5-10 minutes) from the parking to the complex.

• Go in late afternoon for warm light on the monastery and the dramatic Kasagh River gorge - the stone buildings and cliffs look best in that light.
• Park at the official lot above the site and take the short path down: make sure to walk to the gorge viewpoint, which many visitors skip.
