Tsiranavor Church of Ashtarak Church

Tsiranavor Church of Ashtarak is a medieval Armenian church in the town of Ashtarak, Aragatsotn Province, and forms part of a closely grouped trio of historic churches above the Kasagh River gorge.

The site is visited as part of a compact circuit that includes two other nearby churches; the three churches are within a short walking distance of one another and are easy to see in a single visit. The churches are small stone buildings with characteristic Armenian domes and medieval masonry, set on the town’s gorge rim with clear views down the Kasagh River.

These churches date to the early medieval period and have been important local parish churches through successive restorations. Local tradition and architectural study identify the three buildings as distinct historic churches that together illustrate regional medieval Armenian church design.

The cluster sits in the town of Ashtarak, Aragatsotn Province, on the rim of the Kasagh River gorge, roughly west of Yerevan and accessible by road from the capital.

• Spitakavor Church: A nearby white-stone church that, together with the others on the gorge rim, forms the trio commonly visited in Ashtarak; known locally for its light-colored exterior.

Tsiranavor Church is in the town center of Ashtarak. From Yerevan you can reach Ashtarak by road (about 20 km northwest of Yerevan); regular marshrutka (minibus) services run from Yerevan to Ashtarak’s central bus stops, and the church is a short 5-10 minute walk from the town’s main stops. If you drive, follow the main highway toward Ashtarak and park in the town centre.
