Etchmiadzin Cathedral is the principal cathedral of the Armenian Apostolic Church, located in the city commonly known as Vagharshapat (Etchmiadzin) in Armavir Province. It is traditionally regarded as one of the earliest cathedrals built after Armenia adopted Christianity as a state religion in the early 4th century.

The cathedral and its surrounding ecclesiastical complex host liturgical functions, church administration and a treasury of religious artefacts. Many pilgrims and visitors come to see the cathedral’s early medieval cores and the church collections.

Founded in the early 4th century in the aftermath of Armenia’s conversion to Christianity, the site has been rebuilt and renovated several times over the centuries while remaining the centre of the Armenian Church. Successive architectural phases reflect medieval and later restorations connected to the Catholicosate.

The cathedral sits in the town of Vagharshapat (Etchmiadzin) in western Armenia’s Armavir Province, a short drive west of Yerevan, set within a larger complex of churches, administrative buildings and gardens.

Etchmiadzin Cathedral (Vagharshapat) is about 20-30 minutes’ drive west of central Yerevan (roughly 20 km) by car via the main westbound road. Regular minibuses and buses run from Yerevan to Vagharshapat; the cathedral is in the town centre and is a short walk from the local bus stops.

• Aim for a weekday morning visit to Etchmiadzin Cathedral to avoid pilgrimage crowds and to see the cathedral with better quiet time; check service times in advance since liturgies can restrict access to parts of the complex.
• Allow extra time for the treasury/museum (located near the cathedral), which houses important relics and liturgical items-many visitors miss this separate collection when they stick only to the cathedral building.
• Enter from the main courtyard area and stroll the adjoining church complex and bishops' residences-the compact layout means you can see the key historical elements without extensive walking, but crowds can cluster at the main entrance mid-day.
