How to Get to Ashtarak#
Ashtarak is easiest reached from Yerevan (Zvartnots Airport) by a short road trip; it’s close enough for frequent marshrutkas and short taxi rides. Trains are not a practical option for this short route.
Zvartnots International Airport (EVN): Most visitors arrive in Armenia via Zvartnots (Yerevan). From Zvartnots take the airport bus (Route 201) to central Yerevan (approx. 300 AMD, ~30-45 min) and then a short marshrutka or local taxi to Ashtarak. Taxis from the airport to Yerevan cost roughly 3,000-7,000 AMD.
Shirak/Gyumri Airport (LWN): Shirak is the nearest airport for northwestern Armenia; it serves Gyumri. From Gyumri you can continue by intercity bus or marshrutka toward Ashtarak via Yerevan or regional connections - expect a longer overland journey (several hours).
Train: There is no direct passenger rail service to Ashtarak; the Armenian rail network is centred on Yerevan (Yerevan railway station). Trains are limited, so most travellers use road transport.
Bus / Marshrutka: Ashtarak is well served by regular minibuses from Yerevan’s Kilikia and central bus stations; the ride takes roughly 30-45 minutes from Yerevan and fares are inexpensive (commonly a few hundred AMD). Regional buses also connect Ashtarak with nearby towns and villages.
How to Get Around Ashtarak#
Ashtarak is best reached and navigated by road: short marshrutkas from Yerevan are frequent and practical, while local buses and taxis handle shorter trips. Walking in the town is pleasant and convenient.
- Regional marshrutka (300-600 AMD) - Frequent minibuses run between Yerevan and Ashtarak throughout the day; they leave from central minibuses stops and are the cheapest option. The trip is short (around 30-45 minutes) so marshrutkas are efficient for day trips and transfers to local buses.
- Local bus (200-500 AMD) - Local buses link Ashtarak with neighbouring villages and the surrounding Aragatsotn region. Timetables can be sporadic - ask locally or at the town station for the latest departures.
- Taxi (1,000-3,000 AMD) - Taxis are useful for door-to-door travel, getting to trailheads, or early/late connections when marshrutkas aren’t running. Always agree the price before starting; drivers accept cash only.
- Car hire (From ~15,000 AMD/day (varies)) - Renting a car from Yerevan lets you reach Ashtarak and explore Aragatsotn (mountain roads to sights like the Amberd area). Roads are surfaced but rural signage is limited, so navigation help is useful.
- Biking (Varies / often not available locally) - Ashtarak and the surrounding plains are pleasant for cycling on quieter roads; bring a good map and be cautious of traffic on main roads. Bike hire is limited locally - check guesthouses in town.
- Walking - Ashtarak’s compact historic centre and nearby viewpoints are easy to explore on foot. Walking is the best way to enjoy the small-town atmosphere and short cultural routes.
