How to Get to Ratnapura#
Ratnapura is best reached by road from Colombo (Bandaranaike International Airport) - there is no strong direct rail link so coaches and private cars are the common choices. Expect a multi-hour drive across hilly, often congested roads into the Sabaragamuwa tea/gem country.
Bandaranaike International Airport (CMB): The main international gateway for Sri Lanka, near Negombo and Colombo. By road to Ratnapura the journey typically takes about 2.5-3.5 hours depending on traffic; taxis and private transfers are common (door-to-door car transfers are often priced in the range LKR 10,000-20,000 depending on vehicle and driver).
Mattala Rajapaksa International (HRI): Located in the south (Hambantota), this airport has limited services and is a much longer drive to Ratnapura (typically 4-5+ hours), so it’s rarely used for travel to Ratnapura.
Train: Ratnapura is not well served by Sri Lanka’s mainline rail network; there is no reliable direct intercity train service to Ratnapura, so rail is generally not the recommended option.
Bus: Regular buses and private express services run from Colombo (Fort) and the Maharagama/Avissawella area to Ratnapura. Journey time from Colombo is about 2.5-3 hours on express/private coaches and local buses; fares on local buses are very low (typically a few hundred LKR), while private/express services cost more (several hundred to a few thousand LKR).

- Local buses (LKR 50-300) - Local buses serve smaller villages and run more frequently but are slower and crowded during peak times. They are very cheap and useful for short hops around the Ratnapura district; luggage space is limited.
