Historically Praya has been a trading and service centre for surrounding farming communities; cattle, rice and produce markets are still important. The town is not a beach destination but provides practical amenities, cheap accommodation and bus links to destinations such as Kuta Lombok and Senggigi. Expect a relaxed, workaday atmosphere, lively market mornings and quieter evenings when most travellers move on to coastal resorts.

Most visitors pass through Praya rather than stay long, using it as a convenient place to shop for supplies, try local street food and experience an authentic Lombok market. It is also the administrative hub for the region and a good base for arranging onward transport to southern beaches or treks to Mount Rinjani. Short stays here are practical if you need to be near the airport or prefer quieter, less touristy surroundings than the coast.

• By Ferry: Lembar - Bali routes: Ferries arrive and depart from Lembar on Lombok’s southwest coast; Praya is a 45-90 minute drive from Lembar depending on traffic. Foot-passenger ferry fares and fast-boat options vary by operator - expect roughly 30,000-100,000 IDR for regular crossings; check schedules in advance.

Praya is quiet after dark compared with coastal resorts; evenings are mostly low-key with local cafés and food stalls open late. For nightlife with bars and live music, head to Senggigi or Kuta Lombok on the coast.

Praya’s central market is the main shopping draw for local produce, spices, textiles and household goods, while a few small shopping centres and stores stock toiletries and travel necessities. Bargaining is common in the market; fixed-price modern stores are available for straightforward purchases.
