Mount Rinjani at a Glance#

Classic 2 to 3 day, roughly 40 km volcanic circuit from village trailheads to the crater rim and lake.

Time to Hike: 2 to 3 days covering about 40 km with large elevation gain on day one and a steep pre-dawn summit push; typical itineraries include one or two nights camping.

Best Time to Go: The dry season from April to October offers the most stable conditions; July and August are busiest and more crowded on the summit day.

Getting there: Trailheads are at the villages of Senaru and Sembalun on Lombok; most visitors fly into Lombok International Airport in Praya or arrive via boat from Bali and travel by road to the villages.

Costs: You must register with the park and hire a local guide or trekking operator; expect park entry, guide and camping fees plus transport and accommodation in trailhead villages. Fees vary so budget for operator services and tips.

Difficulty: Steep, sometimes loose volcanic scree and rocky trails with significant altitude gain to the rim and summit at over 3,700 m; cold nights and rapidly changing weather make this a challenging trek for fit, experienced walkers.

About Mount Rinjani#

Mount Rinjani rises in the centre of Lombok and the trek crosses lower tropical forest into barren volcanic slopes, then past the dramatic crater rim down to the turquoise crater lake Segara Anak. The best viewpoints are the summit ridge and the rim at sunrise, when you can see the lake and the surrounding islands.

There are no serviced mountain huts on the route - overnighting is in organised campsites on the crater rim and at lakeside, or in basic guesthouses in Senaru and Sembalun before and after the trek. The combination of active volcano scenery, the lake and long ridge views make Rinjani a standout volcanic trek in Indonesia.

Getting There#

Lombok International Airport in Praya is the nearest airport; many international visitors arrive via a short flight from Bali or by ferry to Lombok then road transport. The provincial capital Mataram and the resorts of Senggigi are common staging points with buses and private transfers to the trailhead villages.

Most operators meet trekkers in Sembalun or Senaru and the common itinerary starts at Sembalun for a steadier approach and descends to Senaru; transfers back to the airport or ports are normally arranged by your operator.

Best Time to Hike#

Mount Rinjani is most walkable in the dry season, typically April to October when trails are firmer and visibility is better. Heavy rain from November to March makes steep volcanic slopes slippery and increases risk of landslips and difficult river crossings.

The park operates a registration and guide system through Mount Rinjani National Park and you should book guides and campsites through a reputable operator in advance for the high season. Expect cold nights near the rim and the possibility of sudden storms even in the dry months.
