Gili Air
Island Small Lombok island popular for snorkeling and beaches
Gili Air, one of the Gili Islands off Lombok, attracts snorkelers and scuba divers, beachgoers and cyclists; its small hotels and beachfront bars make it a relaxed island base.
Gili Air is a small island in West Nusa Tenggara, Indonesia, one of the three Gili Islands off the northwest coast of Lombok. It is known for a relaxed island atmosphere, reef-fringed beaches and a tourism economy focused on snorkeling and diving.
Shallow reefs around the island support coral, reef fish and frequent sea turtle sightings, making snorkeling and scuba diving the primary activities. The island has a single compact village with dive shops, guesthouses and restaurants rather than large resorts.
Historically less developed than nearby Gili Trawangan, the island has grown as a low-key tourism destination while retaining restrictions on motorised traffic. Small-scale hospitality and dive operations expanded from the late 20th century as the Gilis became better connected by boat.
Gili Air lies off the northwest coast of Lombok in the Lesser Sunda Islands and is accessed by boat from Lombok and Bali. The island is small and easily traversed on foot or by bicycle.
- Transport: Motorised vehicles are not used on the island - people travel on foot, by bicycle or by horse-drawn carriage known locally as a cidomo.
- Access: Day boats and fast boats connect the island to Lombok and Bali; travel times vary by service and sea conditions.
What to See #
- Main village: The island's main settlement is a compact village on the eastern side with guesthouses, restaurants and dive operators serving day trips and island services.
- Beaches and reefs: Fringing coral reefs and shallow lagoon areas surround much of the island and provide snorkeling and dive sites where sea turtles and reef fish are commonly seen.
How to Get to Gili Air #
Public boats and fast boats connect Gili Air with Bangsal on Lombok and with Bali (Padangbai/Serangan) depending on operators. Schedules change by season; book transfers in advance during peak periods.
Tips for Visiting Gili Air #
- Take the early public boat from Bangsal (Lombok) or fast boats from Bali/Padangbai to avoid afternoon winds.
- Stroll the island's quiet lanes in the morning for the best light and to see local fishermen returning with early catches.
- Respect turtle conservation programs: Gili islands have hatcheries and night-time nesting that should not be disturbed.
