How to Get to Placencia#

Placencia is a beach village on a slender peninsula in southern Belize. You can reach it by short domestic flight into Placencia (PLJ) from Belize City or by road buses/shuttles down the Southern Highway from Belize City and Dangriga.

By Air

Philip S. W. Goldson International (BZE): Belize’s main international airport near Belize City. Domestic carriers (Tropic Air and Maya Island Air) run regular flights from BZE to Placencia’s small airstrip (PLJ); the flight is about 20-25 minutes.

Placencia Airport (PLJ): A small local airport on the peninsula served by Tropic Air and Maya Island Air. Flights from Belize City are short (≈20-25 min); check each carrier for current fares (commonly in the ~US$80-120 one-way range).

By Train & Bus

Train: Belize has no passenger rail network.

Bus: Regular public buses and express coaches run from Belize City or Dangriga to Placencia (via the Southern Highway). The road journey from Belize City to Placencia takes about 3-3.5 hours by bus or car; smaller local buses and shuttle services are available from Dangriga for the final leg.

How to Get Around Placencia#

For speed, fly BZE→PLJ with Tropic or Maya. For budget travel, buses/shuttles along the Southern Highway are reliable and inexpensive. Once on the peninsula, walking, short taxi trips and boats cover most local travel.

  • Domestic Flight (Tropic / Maya) (US$80-120) - Tropic Air and Maya Island Air operate frequent short flights between Belize City (BZE) and Placencia (PLJ). Flights are fast (≈20-25 minutes) and remove the long road transfer; book ahead in high season as flights fill quickly.
  • Bus / Shuttle (US$5-50) - Regular public and private buses run from Belize City and Dangriga to Placencia along the Southern Highway. Travel time from Belize City is roughly 3-3.5 hours; private shuttles are faster and more comfortable than the public bus and can drop you at your guesthouse.
  • Taxi / Private Transfer (US$120-200) - Taxis and private door-to-door transfers are the most comfortable option if arriving with heavy luggage or in a group. Negotiate fares up front; transfers from Belize City typically take 2.5-3.5 hours depending on traffic and stops.
  • Car / Rental (US$40+/day) - Renting a car gives full flexibility to explore the peninsula and nearby cayes. Roads are generally in good condition on the main route, but expect narrower local roads near the village and parking constraints in busy season.
  • Boat / Water Taxi (US$15-100) - For nearby cayes and some resorts, water taxis run from Placencia’s docks. Useful for island-hopping and reef trips; operators publish rates per person or per craft depending on destination and distance.
  • Walking - Placencia’s narrow main street and peninsula are best explored on foot - everything from restaurants to beaches is walkable once you’ve arrived.
