How to Get to Ouarzazate#
Ouarzazate is reached by a small regional airport (Ouarzazate Airport, OZZ) and by road links from Marrakech and other Moroccan towns; there is no rail connection. Most international visitors fly into Casablanca (CMN) or Marrakech (RAK) and continue by flight, coach (CTM/Supratours) or private transfer over the High Atlas.
Ouarzazate Airport (OZZ): The city is served by Ouarzazate Airport (OZZ), which handles domestic and occasional international flights. From the airport to the town centre you can take a taxi (10-20 minutes); expect roughly 30-60 MAD for a taxi ride, or arrange a pre-booked transfer which will cost more but drop you at your door.
Marrakech Menara (RAK) / Casablanca Mohammed V (CMN): Many visitors fly into Marrakech (RAK) or Casablanca (CMN) and continue overland to Ouarzazate. Flights from Casablanca or Marrakech to Ouarzazate take about 45-75 minutes when available; alternatively, regular bus and private-transfer options connect Marrakech to Ouarzazate (see By Train & Bus). Transfers from Marrakech airport to the bus stations are short taxi rides (approx. 10-20 minutes).
Train: There is no direct train service to Ouarzazate. The nearest major railway hub is Gare ONCF Marrakech (Marrakech Ville). From Marrakech you must continue by bus, grand taxi or private transfer to reach Ouarzazate (see below).
Bus / Coach / Grand Taxi: Intercity coach operators CTM and Supratours serve Ouarzazate from Marrakech and other Moroccan cities; the CTM/Supratours stations are the main departure points (Gare Routière CTM / Supratours). The Marrakech-Ouarzazate road takes about 4-5 hours via the Tizi n’Tichka pass; coach fares are typically in the order of 70-150 MAD (approx.), while shared grand taxis and private transfers cost more but are faster and more flexible. Local buses and grand taxis link Ouarzazate with nearby towns and tourist sites such as Aït Benhaddou and Zagora.
How to Get Around Ouarzazate#
Ouarzazate is best approached by road from Marrakech or by a domestic flight into OZZ; once there, a mix of petit taxis and walking works well in town, while a rental car or private transfer is the most practical way to explore the surrounding desert and kasbahs. Coach operators (CTM/Supratours) offer a reliable budget option for intercity travel.
- Petit taxi (local taxis) (6-30 MAD) - Petit taxis are the easiest way to get around town for short hops. They are metered in most Moroccan towns; short journeys across Ouarzazate are quick and inexpensive. Always ask the driver to use the meter or agree a price before you get in if the meter isn’t used. Expect short rides to cost only a few dozen Moroccan dirhams (approx.).
- Grand taxi (shared/intercity taxis) (50-600 MAD) - Grand taxis operate fixed regional routes and are the main option for nearby towns and villages (Aït Benhaddou, Zagora, Skoura, Agdz). They often leave only when full and can be shared or hired whole; for longer intercity trips they’re faster than coaches but less comfortable. Negotiate or confirm the per-seat price before departure; expect prices to vary with distance and season.
- CTM / Supratours coaches (70-150 MAD) - CTM and Supratours run scheduled coaches to and from Marrakech, Ouarzazate and other cities; these are comfortable, air‑conditioned and reliable for longer journeys. The Marrakech-Ouarzazate route takes about 4-5 hours via Tizi n’Tichka; book ahead in high season and arrive early at the Gare Routière. Fares are reasonable (see card above) and luggage is handled at the bus station.
- Car rental (~250-700 MAD/day) - Hiring a car is the most flexible way to explore the surrounding desert landscapes, Kasbahs and valleys. Several international and local firms operate from the airport and in town; roads around Ouarzazate are generally in good condition but mountain passes (e.g., Tizi n’Tichka) can be slow. Fuel and insurance add to cost; a car is especially useful if you plan to visit remote sites or travel on your own schedule.
- Private transfers & tours (400-1500 MAD (trip-dependent)) - Private transfers and guided day tours are widely available and useful for one‑off trips to Aït Benhaddou, film studios or desert excursions. They cost more than public transport but save time and hassle, and guides can provide local context and access. Book reputable operators in advance during peak season to secure the vehicle type you want.
- Walking - Ouarzazate’s centre is compact and easy to explore on foot; many sights (markets, kasbahs, cafés) are a short walk from the main square. Walking is the best way to soak up the atmosphere and find local shops and restaurants. For excursions outside town, combine walking with taxis or a hired car.
