How to Get to Opicina

Opicina sits above Trieste and is reached easily via Trieste Airport (TRS) or Trieste Centrale station. The historic Trieste-Opicina tram/funicular and local buses provide the direct, characterful link up the hill from the city centre.

By Air

Trieste - Friuli Venezia Giulia Airport (TRS) / Venice (VCE): Trieste Airport (TRS) is the closest international airport to Opicina; Venice (VCE) or Ljubljana (LJU) are alternatives. From TRS it’s a short taxi or bus ride to Trieste city and then a quick onward hop to Opicina.

Bus / Tramway: The vintage tram/funicular hybrid (Trieste-Opicina tramway) runs from the city up to Opicina and is a notable local connection; regular city buses also serve the route. The tram/funicular is both practical and a tourist attraction-check seasonal times.

How to Get Around Opicina #

Opicina (Opčine) sits on the hills above Trieste and is linked to the city by the historic Trieste-Opicina tram/funicular line; it’s a quick and scenic way to get to central Trieste. Regular buses also serve the route, but expect a steep climb if you walk from the tram stop to some viewpoints. A car works well for exploring the Karst plateau and surrounding countryside, though parking in peak periods can be limited. Bring layered clothing-the hill can be windier than the city below.
