How to Get to Nicoya
Nicoya is reached primarily by road from Liberia (LIR) or San José; public buses and tourist shuttles serve the route routinely. For comfort and speed choose a shuttle or private transfer, especially during the dry season when roads are busy.
Daniel Oduber Quirós International Airport / Liberia (LIR): Liberia is the main gateway for Nicoya and the Nicoya Peninsula. From Liberia to Nicoya town the road transfer is roughly 1.5-2.5 hours by bus or shuttle, depending on route; shared shuttles cost approximately CRC 4,000-8,000 and local buses are cheaper (check schedules).
Juan Santamaría International Airport / San José (SJO): From San José the trip to Nicoya is longer (about 4-5 hours by road) and typically done by intercity bus or private transfer. Direct buses run from San José to Nicoya with travel times around 4-5 hours and fares typically in the range of CRC 3,000-7,000 depending on carrier and class.
Train: Costa Rica’s passenger rail network does not serve Nicoya.
Bus / Shuttle: Public buses run frequently from Liberia to Nicoya (and from San José on scheduled services).
