How to Get to Tamarindo, Costa Rica

Tamarindo is most easily accessed from Liberia (LIR) or by road from San José. Shared shuttles and private transfers are the simplest door‑to‑door options; public buses are possible for budget travellers but take longer and may have limited luggage space.

By Air

Daniel Oduber Quirós International Airport (LIR): Closest airport to Tamarindo (about 1-1.5 hours by road). Taxis or private transfers from LIR typically cost USD 45-80 and take roughly 60-90 minutes depending on the specific beach destination.

Juan Santamaría International Airport (SJO): From San José the road trip to Tamarindo takes about 4-5 hours. Shared shuttles and private transfers are common (USD 60-120); public buses are much cheaper but much slower and require changes.

By Train & Bus

Train: Costa Rica’s passenger rail network does not serve Tamarindo; rail is not a practical travel option for beach towns on the Pacific coast.

Bus / Shuttle: Public buses run from Liberia to Tamarindo (and from other regional hubs). Bus fares are low (CRC 300-1000 / ~USD 0.50-2.00) depending on route; private shuttles are faster and cost USD 40-70 from LIR or SJO.
