Mount Bintumani is the highest mountain in Sierra Leone and the dominant peak of the Loma Mountains range. It stands out as the country’s loftiest point and a significant natural landmark.
The mountain and surrounding Loma range have been known and used by local communities for generations; more recent visits have focused on exploration, biodiversity surveys and limited trekking tourism.
Located in northern Sierra Leone within the Loma Mountains, the peak sits inland from the coastal plain and forms part of a compact highland area in the country’s interior.

- Start the ascent very early and plan for a multi‑day trek - reaching the peak and descending in one day is strenuous and afternoon storms are common in the wet season.
- Hire a local guide and, where required, obtain permissions through the forestry or park authorities; local guides know the safest routes, suitable campsites and can handle navigation on poorly marked trails.
- Aim for the dry season (roughly November-April) when trails are firmer, river crossings are safer and porters/guides are more reliably available.
