Outamba-Kilimi National Park

Outamba-Kilimi National Park is a protected area in northwestern Sierra Leone established to conserve a mix of forest, savannah and freshwater habitats. It is recognised for its wildlife and relatively intact ecosystems in the region.

The area was set aside for conservation in the late 20th century as recognition grew of its biological importance and the need to protect habitats and wildlife from increasing pressure. Management focuses on community engagement and tourism-compatible protection.

Located in the northwestern part of Sierra Leone near the border with Guinea, the park lies in a mixed landscape of low hills and river valleys and is reached from regional towns by road.

• Wildlife viewing: Known for wildlife viewing on foot and by boat, including several primate species and a range of large mammals found in northern Sierra Leone.

What to See#

• Habitat mosaic: Distinct zones of gallery forest, savannah and riverine wetlands that form a mosaic of habitats across the park’s boundary areas.

• Go during the dry season (roughly November-May) when dirt tracks and river access are easier and wildlife viewing from early‑morning walks and boat trips is more reliable.
• Arrange activities through the park office or an accredited lodge/community enterprise in advance - guided river safaris and ranger‑led walks are the most dependable ways to see hippos, primates and other wildlife.
• Plan early starts (dawn) for both boat and walking safaris; wildlife is most active at first light and mid‑day heat or rain reduces sightings and trail accessibility.
