Loma Mountains

The Loma Mountains are a compact mountain range in northern Sierra Leone that include the country’s highest peaks. The range supports montane forests and plays an important role in regional hydrology and biodiversity.

The range has long been part of the landscape used by local peoples for hunting, gathering and small-scale agriculture; scientific interest and limited conservation measures have increased in recent decades.

Situated in northern Sierra Leone, the Loma Mountains rise inland from the coastal zone and lie within the broader interior highlands of the country.

• Main range: Contains the country’s highest elevations, including Mount Bintumani, and a mix of lowland and montane forest habitats.

• Treat Loma Mountains as a multi‑day trek area and coordinate with local community guides or the forestry service in advance to secure route guidance and any necessary permits.
• Visit in the dry season (November-April) for best trail conditions and clearer summit views; heavy rains can make routes muddy, steep and difficult to navigate.
• Include village stops in your itinerary: community guides can direct you to lesser‑visited viewpoints, camp spots and help arrange porters, which many independent hikers miss.
