Gola-Tiwai Complex Nature Reserve

The Gola-Tiwai Complex in eastern Sierra Leone comprises riverine islands and contiguous rainforest blocks that together form an important biodiversity and conservation landscape. The area is notable for its intact tropical forest habitats and wildlife.

Visitors encounter dense rainforest, river channels and an ecological mosaic that supports primates, forest mammals and diverse birdlife. Tiwai Island functions as a sanctuary and research base within the wider Gola forest landscape.

The forests have long been used by local communities for subsistence and cultural practices; modern conservation efforts have established protected areas and research facilities to conserve biodiversity. Collaborative management arrangements involve local and national agencies.

The complex lies in the eastern part of Sierra Leone’s Eastern Province along river systems and contiguous forest blocks, forming part of the transboundary forest landscape in the region.
