Adriatic Coast & Riviera (Ulcinj - Budva - Bar)

Clothing folds get lighter in May as the Riviera moves toward summer-days commonly hit the low to mid-20s C and the sea begins to feel inviting around the mouth of the bays. Beach umbrellas and boat tours start regular operation, and towns such as Budva and Sutomore see more international visitors, though not the full July crush. Watch for the occasional late-season storm that can disrupt small boat services and make the sea rough, but generally it’s a perfect month for cycling the coast and eating outdoors. Mosquitoes are still limited but appear near marshes and river mouths.

Bay of Kotor & Herceg Novi (Kotor - Perast - Herceg Novi)

Late spring in May tends to be mild and increasingly sunny on the Bay, with daytime temperatures usually in the high teens to low 20s Celsius and long evenings for waterfront dining. Tourist businesses ramp up but the full July-August crowds have not yet arrived, so it’s a great time to climb to St. John’s Fortress or take boats to Perast. The bay can still receive an occasional soggy front, so keep a light rain jacket handy. Birdwatchers near the bay and the mouths feeding into the sea will notice migration activity.

Lake Skadar & Podgorica Plain (Lake Skadar - Podgorica - Virpazar)

Late spring in May is reliably pleasant across the plain-days typically sit in the low to mid-20s Celsius and the lake attracts local swimmers and anglers. Virpazar’s waterfront cafés buzz on sunny weekends, and hiking in nearby hills is excellent before summer heat builds. Mosquitoes start to appear near reedbeds and slow-moving arms of the lake, so insect repellent is recommended for evening outings. Travel-wise, it’s a great shoulder-season to combine birdwatching with visits to Podgorica’s markets.

Northern Highlands & Mountains (Durmitor - Žabljak - Prokletije - Tara Canyon)

Late spring in May is a delightful but changeable time in the mountains: lower trails clear and rhododendrons begin to bloom, while higher routes may still demand snow equipment. Temperatures are pleasantly cool for hiking-often 10-18°C in valleys-and waterfalls unleashed by snowmelt are at their most impressive. Mountain guesthouses reopen in earnest and hiking routes to peaks like Bobotov Kuk see increasing traffic. Dogs of local flocks and shepherds are common on trails; bring gaiters and sturdy boots.
