Adriatic Coast & Riviera (Ulcinj - Budva - Bar)

September is the Riviera’s favorite compromise: warm sea temperatures linger from summer and daytime highs drop into the low to mid-20s C, while crowds thin noticeably after the August peak. Many restaurants and services remain open, making it ideal for longer stays or combining beach time with inland attractions like Lake Skadar. Storms become more frequent toward late month as autumn approaches, so check forecasts before long boat outings. Lightweight layers remain useful for the cooler evenings and sea breezes.

Bay of Kotor & Herceg Novi (Kotor - Perast - Herceg Novi)

September’s quieter pace shows at once: temperatures settle in the low 20s C, the sea is at some of its warmest for late-season swims, and walks up to the fortress are pleasant without the summer crush. Rain becomes more likely toward month’s end as the autumn pattern begins to reassert itself, and some small businesses start to close. The bay is ideal for relaxed photography, exploring Perast’s churches, or taking a late-season boat tour if conditions are calm. A light sweater for evenings is useful.

Lake Skadar & Podgorica Plain (Lake Skadar - Podgorica - Virpazar)

September’s cooling trend makes the plain more comfortable for exploration: daytime temperatures return to the low to mid-20s Celsius, and late-season migrant birds pass through Lake Skadar in numbers. The harvest is underway at local wineries, and Virpazar restaurants serve fresh catches and grape festivals. Rain increases later in the month, heralding the shift toward autumn-check for muddy tracks if you’re hiking small trails. Bring a light rain jacket for sudden showers and evenings that feel cooler by the water.

Northern Highlands & Mountains (Durmitor - Žabljak - Prokletije - Tara Canyon)

September’s cool mornings and clear afternoons make it one of the best months for mountain travel-daytime highs are comfortable for long hikes and the first autumn tints appear on alpine grasses. Rafting on the Tara can still be excellent early in the month, particularly after summer rainfall, and photographers will find great light at golden hour with fewer hikers on the trails. Services start to downscale toward late September; bring layers for chilly nights and expect some mountain huts to close by October.
