Monorom Waterfall Waterfall

Monorom Waterfall lies much closer to Sen Monorom town than the better-known Bou Sra Waterfall, making it a quick and easy side trip from guesthouses in the town centre. The falls themselves are picturesque and well worth visiting, though facilities are non-existent and a hydroelectric plant upriver can jar with the idea of a quiet retreat into nature.

There are three tiers to the waterfall, but the second stage, where the water drops more than 6 metres, is the one worth seeing. Only about 5 km from the town centre, it is a popular meeting place for locals and gets busiest around noon at weekends, when families come out to picnic and swim.

A trail runs to the falls from Sen Monorom town, easy to follow thanks to its bright red soil but inconsistently signposted, so it is easy to lose your way. Hiring a guide in the town centre is cheap and takes the guesswork out of the walk.

Monorom Waterfall is located near Sen Monorom (the town often called Mondulkiri provincial capital) in eastern Cambodia. The usual approach is to reach Sen Monorom by regional bus or private vehicle from provincial centres, then take a short local drive of a few kilometres from the town to the waterfall followed by a brief walk from the parking area to the fall. Local guesthouses and tour operators in Sen Monorom can arrange transport to the site.

• Plan this visit in the dry season (roughly November-April) when rural tracks in the Mondulkiri/Sen Monorom area are most passable; heavy rains can make access difficult and require 4x4 transport.
• Use a local driver or guide from Sen Monorom-signage and services at rural waterfalls are often limited, and a local driver will know the best access points and quieter times to visit.
