Baja California Peninsula (Baja California & Baja California Sur)

By November the peninsula cools noticeably and tourism picks up again - Los Cabos sees increasing visitors through the winter months. Days are generally sunny and comfortable, ideal for land-based activities, golf and boating on calmer days in the Sea of Cortez; pack suncream and a midweight jacket for nights. Ferry crossings are typically reliable again and the first whale spotters start watching for early arrivals in late season.

Pacific Coast & Sierra Madre Occidental (Mazatlán, Puerto Vallarta, Acapulco, Oaxaca coast)

December completes the transition to dry season and mild temperatures; clear blue skies dominate and ocean conditions are generally calm for snorkeling and whale-watching in the northern Pacific. Coastal towns are busy for the holidays but still very pleasant compared to hotter summer months - pack sun protection for daytime and a light sweater for chilly nights in higher elevations. If you want smaller crowds, aim for early December before holiday travel begins.

Central Highlands & Mexico City Plateau (Mexico City, Guadalajara, Puebla, Guanajuato)

October sees a steady reduction in rain and a move back toward sunny, cooler days - late month is generally drier and ideal for visiting highland cities and archaeological sites. The famous Day of the Dead festivities in late October-early November draw many visitors; pack warmer layers for night vigils at cemeteries, especially in elevated towns such as Pátzcuaro and Mixquic. Road conditions improve as mountain streams drop, making long drives more reliable.

Gulf Coast & Veracruz (Veracruz, Tampico, the Totonac and Olmeca coasts)

December rounds out the dry, mild period with generally sunny days and cool nights - an agreeable time for exploring colonial ports, coastal mangroves and the Papantla vanilla country. Outdoor festivals and cultural events often draw visitors, so book ahead around holidays. Keep a light jacket for evenings when nortes bring a chilly breeze off the Gulf.

Yucatán Peninsula & Quintana Roo (Mérida, Cancún, Tulum, Isla Holbox)

December is high season with sunny warm days and comfortable evenings - Cancún, Tulum and Mérida are lively and beaches are prime for swimming and snorkeling. Tourist numbers spike around Christmas and New Year, so expect higher prices and crowded beach clubs; book early for key excursions like Chichén Itzá at sunrise. Nights are balmy but bring a light layer for breezier coastal evenings and rooftop dinners.

Southern Highlands & Chiapas (Oaxaca highlands, San Cristóbal, Sumidero, El Triunfo)

December settles into the highland dry season with crisp mornings and bright, sunny days - a popular time for festivals and for visiting mezcal villages and colonial centres. Nights can be chilly, particularly at higher altitude towns such as San Cristóbal de las Casas, so a warm jacket is necessary. Road conditions are generally good and the scenery is sharp; however, holiday weeks see more domestic travel, so book ahead for lodging and tours.
