Baja California Peninsula (Baja California & Baja California Sur)

By late January the whale encounters remain excellent around San Ignacio and Mag Bay, and La Paz begins to warm into pleasant daytime sun. If you head to Cabo San Lucas or La Paz the Sea of Cortez is calm and ideal for snorkelling trips, though water still feels brisk without a shorty wetsuit. Road travel is straightforward but some small coastal towns are quieter, offering better deals on lodging.

Pacific Coast & Sierra Madre Occidental (Mazatlán, Puerto Vallarta, Acapulco, Oaxaca coast)

February stays dominated by dry, sun-filled days and comfortable nights - ideal for fishing out of Mazatlán, whale-watching further north, or strolling Puerto Vallarta’s Malecón. Wave action on the open Pacific can be brisk, driving good surf breaks north of Guerrero and down toward Oaxaca, so surfers and spectators both find excitement. Inland hikes to waterfalls and villages are pleasant; pack a light jacket for mountain mornings.

Central Highlands & Mexico City Plateau (Mexico City, Guadalajara, Puebla, Guanajuato)

Late January continues to offer stable, dry weather across the high plateau; Oaxaca Valley towns at elevation remain cool in the mornings and mild by midday. Mountain passes can be cold early and late in the day - pack a warm jacket if you plan sunrise trips to Teotihuacán or volcano viewpoints. Cultural festivals and quieter streets make city exploration easy, but winter can bring occasional sandstorms and agricultural burning haze to the region, so check air-quality reports if sensitive.

Gulf Coast & Veracruz (Veracruz, Tampico, the Totonac and Olmeca coasts)

February typically remains mild and breezy with lower humidity than summer; the Veracruz Carnival period is lively and often scheduled around this time, so expect big crowds and lively street events in Veracruz city. If you’re heading inland to Papantla for the Totonac sites or to the mountain coffee zones, mornings are fresh and afternoons warm but comfortable. Check local event calendars and reserve accommodation if traveling for carnival.

Yucatán Peninsula & Quintana Roo (Mérida, Cancún, Tulum, Isla Holbox)

February stays dry and breezy with low humidity - ideal for beach days and cenote-swimming. Isla Holbox and the biosphere reserves are quieter than high season hotspots, and whale shark season hasn’t started yet so water tours are focused on snorkeling and birdlife. This is a popular time for cultural tourism in Mérida, where restaurants and markets bustle; sunscreen and a hat are essentials for daytime archaeology visits.

Southern Highlands & Chiapas (Oaxaca highlands, San Cristóbal, Sumidero, El Triunfo)

February retains clear, dry weather and bright sunlight across the southern highlands; it’s a good month for exploring markets in Oaxaca city and the mountain villages near Teotitlán del Valle. El Triunfo cloud forest trails are accessible and birdwatching is excellent with many species active; mornings are cool and layered clothes are sensible. This is a popular time for cultural tourism and fiestas, so reserve lodging for weekends and festival dates.
