Baja California Peninsula (Baja California & Baja California Sur)
February still feels like Baja’s high season for wildlife: gray whales continue their displays and boat operators in Loreto and Magdalena Bay are busy. Baja California’s interior deserts stay cool in the mornings around El Rosario or Guerrero Negro, with bright days and frosty nights at higher elevations - layers and sun protection are both needed. Ferry crossings across the Gulf of California are generally reliable now but can be bumped by leftover winter swells on the Pacific side.
Pacific Coast & Sierra Madre Occidental (Mazatlán, Puerto Vallarta, Acapulco, Oaxaca coast)
Early March brings steady warmth and the first hints of humidity; Acapulco and Zihuatanejo start seeing more afternoon cloud buildups but heavy rain is still rare. This is a popular month for Semana Santa planning, so coastal towns become lively and hotels fill quickly around Easter weeks. Surfing conditions improve in some spots as spring swells develop; carry reef-safe sunblock for long beach days.
Central Highlands & Mexico City Plateau (Mexico City, Guadalajara, Puebla, Guanajuato)
February keeps the clear, dry pattern with little rain and comfortable daytime temps - Guadalajara is warm but nights remain brisk while Mexico City stays refreshingly mild. Popular pilgrimage and carnival events in Puebla and surrounding towns can increase crowds on weekends, so bookings near festival dates are recommended. Trails into nearby volcanoes and reserve areas are generally dry and in good condition for hiking.
Gulf Coast & Veracruz (Veracruz, Tampico, the Totonac and Olmeca coasts)
Early March brings a gradual rise in humidity and temperatures; river valleys and coastal wetlands warm up and migratory birds start showing more activity in wetlands near Alvarado. Nortes can still occur but become less frequent; coastal towns see more locals outside of holiday weekends. This month is good for combining cultural visits with birding, but pack light rain protection for unpredictable coastal sprays.
Yucatán Peninsula & Quintana Roo (Mérida, Cancún, Tulum, Isla Holbox)
Early March warms up noticeably; Playa del Carmen and Tulum begin to feel hotter by mid-month and tourist traffic increases ahead of Easter. The cenotes inland are a welcome cool option when the midday sun becomes intense, and the beaches remain pleasant for long afternoons. If traveling during Semana Santa, expect packed resorts and higher prices - book early and plan for crowded transfers.
Southern Highlands & Chiapas (Oaxaca highlands, San Cristóbal, Sumidero, El Triunfo)
March warms noticeably during the day while nights remain brisk in towns like San Cristóbal and Oaxaca; the highlands begin to feel more like spring. Wildflowers and agave fields reflect the seasonal shift and mezcal harvest activity increases in rural valleys. The dry roads are in good condition for exploring mountain routes, though occasional dust and pollen can be bothersome to allergy sufferers.
