High / low are average daily temperatures (°C). “Feels” reflects how hot or cold it feels, allowing for humidity.
Baja California Peninsula (Baja California & Baja California Sur)
The early summer heat arrives in May with inland highs rising; San José del Cabo and La Paz are already hot but less humid than the Mexican mainland. Storms are still uncommon, though the atmosphere begins to humidify as the Gulf of California warms; itineraries that include long drives across the peninsula should plan for high daytime heat. If you’re headed north toward Ensenada, spring wildflowers may still be on show in coastal valleys.
Pacific Coast & Sierra Madre Occidental (Mazatlán, Puerto Vallarta, Acapulco, Oaxaca coast)
June is the start of the main wet season - Puerto Vallarta and the Oaxaca coast already see frequent nightly storms and lush vegetation. Rivers and waterfalls in the Sierra Madre Plaza (such as those near San Sebastián) swell and become dramatic, sometimes making remote roads impassable after heavy rain. Sea conditions can be choppier and some boat trips for snorkeling or fishing may be canceled when storms pass.
Central Highlands & Mexico City Plateau (Mexico City, Guadalajara, Puebla, Guanajuato)
May is the transition month: afternoons grow noticeably hotter and the first thunderstorms often develop by late month, especially near the western Sierra Madre where Guadalajara is located. When storms start they typically appear as heavy but brief downpours in the afternoon, which can flood streets in lower parts of Mexico City. Pack a compact umbrella and be prepared for wet sidewalks during evening rush hours.
Gulf Coast & Veracruz (Veracruz, Tampico, the Totonac and Olmeca coasts)
June ushers in the main rainy season with frequent heavy showers and thunderstorms; the Gulf coast can experience prolonged wet periods punctuated by brighter mornings. Hurricane season is active from June through November on the Gulf as well, so stay informed about tropical forecasts particularly August-October. River levels increase, making boat tours in the Papaloapan and Coatzacoalcos basins more dramatic but sometimes hazardous.
Yucatán Peninsula & Quintana Roo (Mérida, Cancún, Tulum, Isla Holbox)
June brings the arrival of the rainy season; short but intense downpours and frequent thunderstorms refresh the landscape and fill cenotes. Hurricane season is underway (June-November), so monitor tropical forecasts, particularly in August-October when the risk is highest for the Caribbean coast. Many travelers find mornings and early afternoons still pleasant, but late-afternoon rain can interrupt beach plans and boat excursions.
Southern Highlands & Chiapas (Oaxaca highlands, San Cristóbal, Sumidero, El Triunfo)
June is the onset of the wet season proper - Chiapas’ Sumidero Canyon sees higher river flow and spectacular whitewater currents on the Grijalva, making boat tours dramatic but sometimes weather-affected. Mornings are often calm and ideal for sightseeing, with thunderstorms common in the afternoons that can limit extended treks. Expect vibrant green landscapes and fewer tourists compared with dry-season months.
