Atlantic Coast (Nouakchott, Nouadhibou, Banc d’Arguin)

The coastal strip is at its warmest of the year in July, but the ocean keeps highs milder than inland deserts - high 20s°C to low 30s°C rather than extreme heat. Banc d’Arguin’s intertidal flats are productive for shorebirds, though boat access can be hampered by stronger onshore winds. Beachside visits are doable but pack windproof clothing and expect that morning fog may limit early sightseeing until the sun burns it off.

Adrar Plateau and Oases (Atar, Chinguetti)

July is when the first of the Saharan summer storms can reach parts of the Adrar, producing short, dramatic showers and suddenly flowing wadis near Chinguetti; such events are uncommon but dramatic. Daytime temperatures can be extreme in exposed areas, so plan oases-side activities and avoid remote crossings that can be cut by flash runoff. Travelers should be aware that dirt tracks become tricky after any downpour and that mosquitoes may appear near standing water.

Northern Mining Desert (Tiris Zemmour, Zouérat, F’dérik)

July sees the year’s highest daytime heat in many low-lying northern areas, and while the far north rarely receives rain, convective clouds can form on rare occasions. Sandstorms can be intense and local roads may be rough; heavy-duty vehicles are the norm for safe travel. Tourists should consider postponing long transits until cooler months and make sure cooling systems and spare parts are on hand for any vehicle.

Eastern Hodh (Néma, Bassikounou)

July is the heart of the short rainy season across parts of Hodh: when storms come they deliver intense, short-lived downpours that quickly turn dry tracks to mud and can isolate villages. Vegetation responds fast and temporary pools attract birds and grazing animals, which is rewarding for nature-minded visitors but increases insect activity and malaria risk. For safe travel plan for cancellations and carry waterproofs and mosquito protection.

Southern Sahel & Senegal River Valley (Rosso, Kaédi, Boghé)

July is within the main wet season: persistent, sometimes heavy rains can swell the Senegal River and transform floodplains into broad green grazing areas; markets hum with seasonal produce. Flooding can cut off rural villages and make some roads impassable - plan flexible itineraries and stick to main routes. From a traveler’s perspective this is the richest month for riverside wildlife and green landscapes, but bring mosquito protection and waterproof bags for gear.
