Mauritania in February: Weather, Crowds & What to Expect

Atlantic Coast (Nouakchott, Nouadhibou, Banc d’Arguin)

A continuation of cool, dry conditions keeps the coastline comfortable - Nouadhibou remains cooler than inland, and fishermen take advantage of calmer seas. Migratory birds are still common at Banc d’Arguin and the light is excellent for photography; sandflats are accessible minus heavy surf. Travel is straightforward, ferries and small boats run more reliably than in summer, and evenings still need a jacket because of persistent coastal breezes.

Adrar Plateau and Oases (Atar, Chinguetti)

February days continue to be pleasant for exploring the Adrar massif and its rock art sites; winds are generally lighter than in spring and nights remain cool. Camel caravans and local nomad activity are visible around oases, and temporary springs or seepages can still sustain small pools near Chinguetti. For trekking and cultural visits this is one of the best months: comfortable walking temperatures and clear vistas, though bring layered clothing for cold nights.

Northern Mining Desert (Tiris Zemmour, Zouérat, F’dérik)

February continues to present clear skies and cool nights across Tiris Zemmour; the desert sun is strong during daytime hours and mining operations run steadily. Blowing dust is less severe than in spring but still a factor for photography and exposed camping. Visitors should plan logistics carefully - fuel, permits and reliable transport are essential here, and local hotels in Zouérat can fill quickly with traveling workers.

Eastern Hodh (Néma, Bassikounou)

February continues the pattern of dry, warm days and cool nights; it’s a practical month for overland travel and seeing nomadic settlements around Bassikounou. The low rainfall means very little vegetation, but the clarity of the light is excellent for photos of wide horizons. Ensure vehicles carry ample water and fuel: distances between service points are long and facilities thin in eastern Hodh.

Southern Sahel & Senegal River Valley (Rosso, Kaédi, Boghé)

February keeps the river valley in dry, comfortable weather with warm afternoons ideal for exploring Kaédi’s markets and the riverfront at Boghé. Water levels are typically low and exposed sandbars reveal mudflats used by birds; this is good for photography and short boat excursions. Expect manageable road conditions between towns and fewer insects than in the wet season, though pack sunscreen for long, exposed days.
