Atlantic Coast (Nouakchott, Nouadhibou, Banc d’Arguin)

Autumn brings a return to very pleasant coastal weather: days are warm without being hot, early mornings are often misty, and evenings cool to the high teens Celsius. Fishing communities are active and local markets in Nouakchott and Nouadhibou are lively after the low-season lull; this is a good time for coastal photography and birding. Pack layers for chilly mornings, and expect fewer tourists than in winter, so local guides are easier to book.

Adrar Plateau and Oases (Atar, Chinguetti)

Cooler mornings return in October, making trekking and visits to ancient libraries in Chinguetti much more pleasant - days are warm and dry, nights comfortably cool. Packs of camels and local markets bustle with activity as people take advantage of the milder weather to move livestock. For visitors this is a prime time for multi-day tours across the Adrar and for comfortable desert camping under clear skies.

Northern Mining Desert (Tiris Zemmour, Zouérat, F’dérik)

October’s milder days and cool nights are well-suited to visiting open-air mining museums or arranging cultural interactions with nomadic families passing through the region. Reduced wind means dust is less intrusive, making caravan routes and landscape photography more enjoyable. However, always travel with a well-serviced vehicle and local guidance - distances between settlements are long and amenities sparse.

Eastern Hodh (Néma, Bassikounou)

October returns to a distinctly drier climate: dust levels rise again and the landscape shifts back toward the ochres of the dry season, though some late greenery persists in sheltered wadis. Travel becomes easier as tracks harden, making overland itineraries more reliable than in the wet months. Visitors should still be conscious of lingering potholes and soft patches on rural roads after the seasonal rains.

Southern Sahel & Senegal River Valley (Rosso, Kaédi, Boghé)

October’s shift toward the dry season brings falling river levels and receding floodplains, exposing mudflats that attract shorebirds and local fishers at work. Days are warm and more comfortable, while nights begin cooling noticeably - a pleasant time for riverside camping or village visits. For visitors, October combines greenery leftover from the rains with far fewer travel disruptions than midsummer, so it’s a good shoulder-season choice.
