Lanai City City

Lanai City is the beating heart of the island and the last intact plantation town in Hawaii. Built by James Dole in the 1920s to house workers for what became the world's largest pineapple plantation, it centers on Dole Park, a grassy square shaded by towering Cook pines. Immigrants from the Philippines, Japan, Korea, China, and Puerto Rico built a community here that still gives the town its character.

Sitting at roughly 1,600 feet, the town is cooler and greener than the coast, with tin-roofed plantation cottages, family-run shops, and no stoplights anywhere on the island. Pineapple production ended in 1992, but Lanai City remains the island's only town and the gateway from which every other adventure begins.

Lanai City sits at the island's center, about a 10-minute drive up from Manele Harbor, where the Expeditions ferry from Lahaina, Maui arrives, or roughly 10 minutes from Lanai Airport (LNY). It is the one place on the island reachable entirely on paved road, and most visitors pass through it to rent a 4WD, grab supplies, and orient themselves before heading out to the coast or backcountry.

Lanai City is pleasant year-round, though its highland setting makes evenings cool and mornings occasionally misty or drizzly. Weekday mornings are quiet; Saturdays bring the local market and more life to Dole Park. It works well as a first or last stop on any day, since shops and restaurants keep limited hours.
