Kalaupapa National Historical Park
Park Isolated Hawaiian peninsula preserving leprosy settlement history
On Molokaʻi’s isolated Kalaupapa peninsula, the national historical park preserves the 19th‑century leprosy settlement associated with Father Damien; visitors arrive for guided history tours, preserved buildings and coastal cliffs.
Kalaupapa National Historical Park preserves the isolated peninsula settlement on the north shore of Molokai that was used to segregate people diagnosed with Hansen’s disease (leprosy). The park protects historic buildings, gravesites and landscapes associated with the settlement and the lives of residents.
Key sites within the park include former clinics, mission chapels and the houses and cemeteries of patients and caregivers; the story of Father Damien is a central element of public interpretation. Visits are managed to respect the privacy of current residents and the sensitive nature of the site.
The settlement was established in the 19th century by the Kingdom of Hawaii as a remote isolation area; it remained an active community through the 20th century and later became a protected historical park under cooperative state and federal management. Over time the peninsula’s structures and cultural resources have been stabilized and interpreted for visitors while access has been limited to protect residents and historic fabric.
The park sits on the Kalaupapa peninsula on the north shore of Molokai, separated from the rest of the island by sea cliffs; access is by a steep mule or foot trail and by scheduled small-airplane service from Molokai, with Kaunakakai serving as the nearest main town.
- Visitor access: Access to the settlement area is restricted and typically requires a permit or an organized guided tour coordinated through park partners.
- Interpretation focus: Site interpretation emphasizes the history of Hansen's disease patients, missionary activity and the community life of the settlement.
