Battle of Kepaniwai

The Battle of Kepaniwai site marks a 1790 battle in the Iao Valley on Maui between forces led by Kamehameha I and the island’s defenders during Kamehameha’s campaign to unify the Hawaiian Islands. The valley retains interpretive markers and memorials that identify the battlefield.

The area is interpreted for visitors through stone markers and the adjacent Kepaniwai Park & Heritage Gardens, which include cultural displays and plantings. The site is accessed by short trails and viewpoints within the valley.

The engagement in 1790 resulted in heavy casualties and is a notable event in Hawaiian history because it helped advance Kamehameha’s consolidation of power across the islands. The valley and its historic sites have since been preserved and interpreted for education and remembrance.

The battlefield lies within central Maui’s Iao Valley, inside the protected parkland near the town of Wailuku, roughly 3 km northwest of Wailuku; the valley is traversed by the Iao Stream and is bounded by steep valley walls and distinctive rock outcrops.
