Hawaiian Islands
Islands Volcanic Pacific archipelago and U.S. state
The Hawaiian Islands (state of Hawaii) offer island-hopping for beaches, surfing, snorkeling, native Hawaiian cultural events and volcanic parks across Oahu, Maui, Kauai and the Big Island.
The Hawaiian Islands are an archipelago in the central Pacific Ocean that make up the U.S. state of Hawaii. The group includes eight major islands that are the focus of most settlement and tourism.
Each island offers distinct landscapes and attractions - from volcanic summits and lava fields on the largest island to beaches, cliffs, and cultural sites elsewhere. Inter-island air travel and limited ferry services connect the main islands and support tourism and transport.
Geologically the islands are the peaks of a submerged volcanic mountain chain formed by hotspot volcanism. The chain and its surrounding marine environments host unique ecosystems and significant cultural history tied to Native Hawaiian traditions.
The islands lie in the central Pacific and the state capital, Honolulu, is on Oahu; they are a long distance from continental landmasses and serve as a major Pacific hub for travel and culture.
- Main islands and access: The archipelago comprises eight main islands commonly visited for tourism, each with distinct landscapes and transport links via inter-island flights and ferries where available.
What to See #
- Hawaii (Big Island): Hawaii (Big Island) - the largest island with active volcanoes, diverse climates, and the city of Hilo on the east coast.
- Oahu: Oahu - home to the state capital Honolulu and major population and transport hubs including Waikiki and Pearl Harbor.
- Maui: Maui - known for the Haleakalā crater and the scenic Hana coastline.
- Kauai: Kauai - famed for steep Napali Coast cliffs and the Waimea Canyon gullies.
- Molokai: Molokai - noted for traditional Hawaiian communities and rugged coastlines.
- Lanai: Lanai - smaller island with resort development and quiet landscapes.
- Niihau: Niihau - privately owned island with restricted access and traditional lifestyles.
- Kahoolawe: Kahoolawe - uninhabited island with a history of military use, now subject to restoration efforts.
How to Get to Hawaiian Islands #
Most visitors fly into one of the main airports (Honolulu HNL, Kahului OGG on Maui, Lihue LIH on Kaua’i, or Kona KOA on Hawai’i Island) and then take inter-island flights to reach other islands. Once on an island, rental cars and local bus services (for example TheBus on Oʻahu) are the normal ways to get around; many islands also have taxis and shuttle services.
Tips for Visiting Hawaiian Islands #
- For major sites that limit numbers, check and book required reservations in advance (examples: Haleakala summit sunrise permit and Hanauma Bay entry/reservation) - many Hawaiian state and national sites enforce timed-entry rules.
- Avoid the biggest crowds by visiting popular shorelines and parks first thing in the morning or later in the afternoon; if you can, plan inter-island travel to spend time on less-visited islands (Molokai, Lanai, Kauai's quieter bays) for calmer experiences.
- When planning activities between islands, prioritize scheduled inter-island flights or official ferry services where available and confirm luggage/gear rules ahead - some islands have limited port or air service and smaller operators.
Best Time to Visit Hawaiian Islands #
Hawaii is visitable year-round; for fewer crowds and reliably good weather aim for April-May or September-October.
