Lānaʻi
Island Small Hawaiian island formerly dominated by pineapple plantations
Small Hawaiian island once dominated by pineapple plantations, now noted for rugged inland trails, secluded beaches and a handful of resorts. Visitors combine off-road exploration with snorkeling and hikes.
Lānaʻi is one of the main inhabited islands of Hawaiʻi, historically known for extensive pineapple plantations in the 20th century and for having a small, close-knit population. In recent years most of the island came under largely private ownership and investment focused on a small number of resort developments.
Key visitor draws are quiet beaches, rugged ranchland, and the compact service centre of Lānaʻi City, along with resort areas at Manele Bay and Hulopoe Bay. The island offers a low-density, rural Hawaiian experience compared with the larger neighbouring islands.
The island’s economy shifted from plantation agriculture in the 20th century to tourism and private ownership in the 21st century, with substantial investment in hospitality infrastructure.
Located in the Hawaiian island chain, Lānaʻi lies southwest of Maui and is accessed by short inter-island flights or ferry connections from neighbouring islands in the region.
- Ownership and population: The island is privately owned in large part and has a small resident population of only a few thousand people, so services are concentrated in one town.
- Accommodation: Two luxury resort areas provide the main visitor accommodations; advance bookings are recommended due to limited room supply.
What to See #
- Lānaʻi City: Lanai City is the island's main settlement and service centre, with shops, government services and accommodation cluster.
- Manele Bay / Hulopoe Bay: Manele Bay and Hulopoe Bay on the southern shore are coastal resort areas noted for beaches and marine access.
