Lake Towuti
Lake Ancient Sulawesi lake within the Malili lake system
One of Sulawesi’s Malili lakes, Lake Towuti has clear water, karst islands and traditional villages; visitors kayak, dive for endemic species and stay in simple lakeside homestays.
Lake Towuti is a large tectonic lake on Sulawesi island in South Sulawesi province, Indonesia, and is the largest of the Malili lake system. It is an ancient tectonic basin that supports high freshwater biodiversity.
The lake is used for local transport, fishing and ecotourism; boat trips, swimming and visits to lakeside villages are common activities. Scientists and naturalists visit the lake because it hosts numerous endemic species of fish, crustaceans and freshwater mollusks not found elsewhere.
Lake Towuti formed by tectonic subsidence and long-term geological processes that created the cluster of Malili lakes; its age and stability have allowed unique evolutionary processes in its waters. Human use has included traditional fishing and, more recently, tourism and research.
Geographically it lies in Luwu Regency in South Sulawesi, surrounded by low hills and villages; the nearest service town for visitors is Malili.
